Russia Warns of World War 3 as Ukraine Strikes Deep into Russian Territory with Western Support
Russia cautions the West against allowing deeper Ukrainian strikes, likening it to playing with fire and raising the risk of a global conflict.
Russia has issued a dire warning to Western nations, cautioning that permitting Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory with Western-supplied missiles could ignite a broader conflict, potentially drawing the world into a Third World War. The warning follows Ukraine's bold incursion into Russia’s western Kursk region, marking the largest foreign attack on Russian soil since World War II.
In a press conference in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the West of dangerously escalating the conflict by considering Ukrainian requests to loosen restrictions on the use of foreign-supplied weapons.
“We are now confirming once again that playing with fire—and they are like small children playing with matches—is a very dangerous thing for grown-up uncles and aunts who are entrusted with nuclear weapons in one or another Western country,” Lavrov said.
Kursk Incursion and Russia's Response
Since launching their incursion on August 6, Ukrainian forces have made significant advances in the Kursk region, capturing nearly 500 square miles of territory and over 100 settlements. The attack represents the most significant breach of Russian territory in decades. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized the operation as a major strategic victory, countering Russian threats of retaliation as mere bluffs.
Russian President Vladimir Putin promised a “worthy response” to Ukraine’s actions, although specific measures remain unspecified. The Kremlin has repeatedly raised the specter of nuclear retaliation, with Lavrov reiterating that Russia's nuclear doctrine allows the use of nuclear weapons in response to threats that endanger the state's existence, including attacks with conventional weapons.
Tensions with the West
Moscow has accused the United States and its allies of direct involvement in Ukraine's operations. Russian intelligence officials, including Foreign Intelligence Chief Sergei Naryshkin, dismissed Western denials of involvement, claiming that the U.S. and Britain provided Ukraine with satellite imagery and other critical intelligence following the Kursk incursion.
The New York Times reported that this intelligence aimed to assist Ukraine in monitoring Russian military reinforcements, a move perceived by Moscow as an escalation and direct support for Ukraine's offensive.
Lavrov warned that the West’s actions could extend the conflict beyond Europe, suggesting that World War III would not be confined to the continent. “Americans unequivocally associate conversations about Third World War as something that, God forbid, if it happens, will affect Europe exclusively,” Lavrov stated, underscoring the global risk of the conflict spiraling out of control.
On the Ground: Intensified Fighting
The Kursk incursion has intensified hostilities on the ground. In the last 48 hours, Russian missile and drone attacks have targeted cities across Ukraine, including Kryvyi Rih and Zaporizhzhia, resulting in at least six deaths and nine injuries. Ukraine's air force reported downing several missiles and drones with the help of Western-supplied F-16 fighter jets, but acknowledged that some drones evaded defenses, with one reportedly crossing into Belarus.
Ukrainian forces continue to grapple with challenging conditions, particularly around the eastern city of Pokrovsk, where Russian forces are exerting their numerical and artillery superiority to disrupt Ukrainian supply lines. Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced the capture of the village of Orlivka, further complicating Ukraine’s defensive operations in the region.
Diplomatic Fallout and International Reactions
Amid the escalating military conflict, diplomatic tensions are also flaring. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is expected to present a “victory plan” to U.S. President Joe Biden and other key leaders, aiming to position Ukraine favorably ahead of potential peace talks. Meanwhile, China is seeking broader support for its peace initiatives, engaging countries such as Indonesia, Brazil, and South Africa in diplomatic discussions.
In another development, Russia condemned Ukraine’s decision to ban a Russia-linked branch of the Orthodox Church, calling it an attack on religious freedom. Kyiv has accused the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of supporting Moscow’s war efforts by disseminating pro-Russian propaganda and harboring spies.
